Working with images and mark making that developed around ideas of navigation and exploration during a residency in Helsinki in 2016, Chance Settings OK references plants and other urban backyard vines and creepers that I encounter in and around my inner city Melbourne studio.
Aerial perspectives are mixed with observation mark-making and painting pouring techniques. Like all my work over the last couple of years it’s painted on the back of a clear acrylic sheets. The painting process is reversed or I like to think of it vertically, in layers. The process is inverted when compared to traditional paint-on-canvas methods. The background colour is painted last and covers the entire surface. There is no going back at that stage and the painting only reveals itself at that moment.
